177 (Blackpool Airport) Squadron Air Training Corps.

The 177 (Blackpool Airport) Squadron Air Training Corps. has operated in Blackpool since 1940.

They have 94 enrolled cadets, young people can join the Squadron from turning 12 years old and can stay on as a cadet until their 20th birthday. They can then, if they wish, request to remain and join as adult uniformed staff or a civilian instructor.

The Squadron aims to provide quality education and training to develop skills and positive attitudes among the young people of Blackpool through a diverse range of activities. These include flying and gliding, IT and radio communications, marksmanship, community projects, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, teaching Military and Air Force history and first aid/health & safety training.

The Squadron contacted the Glasdon Charitable Giving Committee with a request for funding support towards the replacement of their minibus which was fast approaching the end of its serviceable life. The minibus is used for weekend, summer and Easter camps, Wing training events, swimming and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, it is a vital amenity for the Squadron.

On behalf of everyone in the Company, the Glasdon Charitable Giving Committee supported this project with a donation towards the cost of the replacement vehicle and the air cadets spent many hours also fundraising towards the final cost.

The Squadron through much hard work were able to purchase a brand new minibus, which was proudly displayed at their 75th Anniversary Dinner and Awards Evening. This was followed by its first outing to Preston for the cadets to marshal a triathlon event.
